Tips to Help you Create Beautiful Functional Bathrooms

Whether you have a small space or you are lucky enough to have a larger space, making sure your bathroom is functional is important when remodeling. Whether you dash in and out of your bathroom, or spend a lot of time in it, a room that flows easily and meets a homeowner’s needs, is a space that will stand the test of time.

5 Ways to Make Your Bathroom More Functional

Your Specific Needs

The most important step is to consider your needs. Here are some things you may want to think about.

  • How much space you have to work with?
  • What are the things that you currently dislike in this particular space?
  • What are your storage needs?
  • Do you want a bath or a shower, or would you like both?
  • Does your bathroom need a total remodel, or will making small changes be sufficient?

Once you have a good idea of your current needs, you can start planning how to remodel your bathroom so that it is both functional and beautiful.

Lighting

If there is not enough light, a small bathroom can feel cramped and uncomfortable. You may choose to let more natural light in by having a skylight installed. If adding natural light is not in your budget, then you may want to update the current lighting you have, or add additional light sources. Installing a glass block window by your shower may also help light spread throughout your bathroom. When considering lighting changes, remember that natural lighting, or soft lighting is often better than harsh glaring lights, especially in a bathroom.

Vanity

A vanity is an important piece in a bathroom. To get the most out of your space, the vanity should be functional as well as look good. When considering placement of a new vanity there are a few things to think about.

  • Plumbing – You may want to just place your vanity where existing plumbing is, if this doesn’t make sense in your space, you can talk to a plumbing/remodeling expert to see if plumbing can be modified or moved.
  • Flow – You want your bathroom to flow well. You also want to be able to pull your vanity drawers out without them blocking space or crashing in to objects.
  • Wall Space – If you want to place a mirror above your vanity, you will need adequate wall space, be sure the spot you pick allows you to have enough wall space for mirrors and good lighting.

Fixtures

If you are looking to gain some space in a small bathroom, you may want to consider installing a wall hung sink. Wall hung sinks will look attractive and can save space. They can be set at any height, and all the plumbing is hidden. This allows more space around and underneath your sink.

Tile Work

If you decide to use tiles in your bathroom, you will need to consider which products will offer you the most when it comes to value, looks, and ease of care. Some tiles look beautiful but can be very hard to care for. Work with a remodeling expert to help you choose a tile that can be easily cared for and last the test of time. Remember when it comes to creating beautiful functional bathrooms, easy to care for and clean is an important part of an enjoyable space.
